- There are a lot of good restaurants in Western New York, but only a few have been given the four-star rating that labels them “extraordinary” in the opinion of News Restaurant Reviewer Janice Okun. In fact, Janice has only given a four-star rating to three restaurants since July 2007. With Janice off this week, we’re taking the opportunity to look back at those three restaurants with condensed versions of her reviews. Bon appetit!

- Londa’s Diner has a fairly low profile in its plaza with a thrift store. Or maybe it’s the unusual hours — this place serves only breakfast and lunch Sunday through Wednesday, adding dinners Thursday through Saturday.

- Western New Yorkers have been crazy about Hoak’s since 1949. That’s the year the modest restaurant opened to the public with two brothers, Edward and Bert Hoak, at the helm. Diners can see a bit of Canada, and the Buffalo skyline is ’round the bend.

- We eat chicken a lot. Boneless, skinless breasts, either grilled or baked. They’re pretty good, or so I used to think. That was before John and I bit into a fried chicken breast from Torella’s Chicken and Pizza.

- John and his buddies discovered August 25 while looking for a beer after a round of golf. (Our server said the place was named for the date of a bankruptcy several owners ago.) There was no beer, but the guys enjoyed homemade soup and desserts, and John noted the Sunday breakfast buffet for $8.95.

- Wow, this is a big restaurant. Kyoto offers its guests a choice of seating in the regular dining rooms, at the large sushi bar or at what is called “hibachi” tables, where seating is arranged around a grill with a chef presiding in the usual theatrical fashion.
