Updated: 08/27/08 10:38 AM

You’ve had the summer off. With school starting next week, it’s time to jumpstart your brain. Why not try the 2008 Maisel General Information Test from Nichols School? The GIT – a tradition that began in the 1911 Nichols yearbook –is compiled from questions submitted by the Nichols faculty and given to Upper School students just for fun. Peter Ewing, Class of 2008, was the winner with a score of 63. The highest score of record is 81, earned by four-time winner George Binette, class of ’78. The GIT is created and coordinated by English teacher Richard Stratton.

Though fashionistas may tell you that purple is the color for fall, stores across Buffalo may suggest otherwise. Green is always in style here, as many businesses are becoming eco-friendly by stocking items made from recycled materials. I went on a hunt for the best places to find these stylish and environmentally sound accessories.

The Hush Sound spent the second-last day of their Dance Across the Country Tour with us at Buffalo’s Xtreme Wheels Skate Park last Sunday. Though it wasn’t a huge turnout, they and their special guests put on a great show that everyone who went enjoyed. In bringing a great line-up, both the Morning Light and Steel Train opened the show with high energy and great stage presence. It was obvious that they were having a good time on-stage and the crowd took notice, as they began to dance around and interact with the bands.

‘The Rocker’ plays too heavily on slapstick humor
By JASON SILVERSTEIN NeXt Correspondent
Updated: 08/27/08 6:51 AM

Would anyone even care about “The Rocker” if Rainn Wilson wasn’t in it? After all, it’s your typical dime-a-dozen comedy where a simple trailer viewing tells you everything you need to know, including the fact that it’s probably not the wisest choice at the multiplex. Still, it’s the first leading film role for the actor behind Dwight Schrute, the iconic highlight character from “The Office,” and there are many of the show’s fans that would see pretty much anything with that asset.

Mayhem Festival could be best show of the year
By MARLI LEE McGARRAH NeXt Correspondent
Updated: 08/27/08 6:51 AM

Some people cringe at the sound of screaming vocals or the thought of anything “metal.” The series of riffs and breakdowns mean nothing. Its just not good music. ... Sadly, they are very mistaken. I guess musicianship means absolutely nothing anymore when every trendy emo band can land Top 10 spots on the radio and MTV by sounding exactly the same. Luckily, there is a bright side to all of this that includes a group of highly talented musicians with noteworthy things to say, and they just streamed through Darien Lake Performing Arts center a week ago on the Rockstar Mayhem Festival. They brought with them the most amazing show of the summer, let alone the year.
